4 Questions for Formative Feedback

Crafted vs vectorised? Which is more successful in terms of visual quality and appropiateness?

Use of sound, do I need to use music, narration or other alterations?

Use of type, is it necessary to use type within my idents?

Do I need to justify the design of the packaging?

  1. Dear Carl,

    Heres your feedback from Tim & Ian

    ////////////////
    Problem analysis
    - Judging from your presentation and going through your blogs throughout this module, your concept and ideas are well documented throughout. You have a clear sense of the target audience and have focused this further my choosing channel 5 as the broadcast channe. You seemed to have decided on your theme and design direction quite early on and the constant development on this is definitely paying off.

    ////////////////////////
    Contextual understanding
    - Solid evidence of research and understanding of subject, which has helped to influenced your design direction.
    - Well considered decisions throughout with the choice of films, which has been documented well.

    ////////
    Research
    - You have looked into a range of inspiring collection of motion graphics, idents etc and seem to be aware of the possibilities of design for digital.

    //////////////////
    Critical awareness
    - Good on going development from your blog, everything seems to be anotated with relevant points.
    - Blog is organised and consise
    - Just noticed a couple of posts that are lacking an explanation, only minor things really but i'm sure you'll be reviewing and correcting all this before hand in!

    Design Development
    - Very strong, experimented with digital and hand rendered visuals. Your designs are coming on well, for some of them, you are at the stage where you are literally nip picking on minor details which is good.
    - Storyboards are in depth and informative, with a strong theme running throughout.
    - Your development shows that you have really made good use of the storyboards.
    - You have yet to start developing your other ideas, the ones you have done are really good and only need minor tweaks if any, so make a start on the other ones!
    - Both of us really like your initial idea with the DVD interface as it incorporates your tv idents. Definitely think you should keep with this concept.
    (Answer to Q 02)
    - You've only tested out the audio through sound effects, which has worked really well. We think we should stick with subtle sound effects as opposed to a piece of music. The knife ident really engages with the viewers, so you should continue with direction of applying subtle audio effects with the motion.
    - Apart from the 'FIVE' logo appearing towards the end, there is no info on the programme time, date etc. We understand that the idea was to appeal to people who would know the films, but do you intend to tell them when they're on? As the ident will be broadcasted on channel 5, maybe you can replace the 5 with the info instead?

    Visual quality
    (Answer to Q 01)
    - As mentioned before you have explored both hand rendered and vector based visuals. We particularly liked the hand rendered ones, the imperfections and the paper quality flickering adds to the theme of your ideas.
    - However, you've done a good job with the vector idents aswell, the simple yet fluent motion, attention to detail and visual impact of the vector ident looks really good. With just over a week left, it's probably better to focus with the vector illustrations.

    ////////////////////
    Technical competence
    - Good, decent, effective and appropriate. You have developed your work according to your storyboards, and haven't allowed the software to take over too much. You seemed to have a good understanding of the software and designing with motion in mind.
    - Consider moving on to develop your other ideas now!

    //////////////
    Answer to Q 03
    Your designs are effective, and we think the use of type should be considered only if it requires information that the images can't represent, such as the date, time etc?

    //////////////
    Answer to Q 04
    No, we think the design speaks for itself and reflects the subject that you're working on.

    Hope that elps!
    Look forwards to the finished set of idents!

    Ian
